I’ve spent a lot of time writing in different genres, trying to figure out which one works best for my writing style and how I can entertain readers while entertaining myself. I’ve written literary fiction, urban fantasy, romance, and horror. No matter which genre I write in all of my books contain supernatural elements. Over time I’ve come to realize something important about my writing and what I like.
I started trying to write romance because someone told me I should. That’s when I wrote The Barista, which was supposed to be a sweet romance, but me being me, I had to put a supernatural element into the story. That always happens.
Recently I’ve been doing some thinking about my interests and which genres they fit into most, and I’ve decided that I’m going to be a horror writer. I love horror. I watch horror movies all the time and enjoy reading stories about scary things. I can’t put those books down. Naturally, I should be writing them.
Why wouldn’t I?
It’s so funny that I’ve illogically thought that I needed to write in some other genre to write books that will support me financially. Now I know that isn’t the truth. From now on, you’ll see a lot more horror from me. It’s an amazing genre full of excellent writers. Horror lets you explore all kinds of interesting subjects.
Look for more posts on this blog from me in the future about the genre and some of my favorite books and movies.
