I’d been wanting to read The Underground Railroad for a long time but kept putting it off because books about slavery are intense and difficult reads. I finished the first draft of The Psychic yesterday. Hurray!
I was struggling with a head cold toward the end, so writing got to be a bit of a chore, but I powered through it. I have a self-imposed deadline to keep after all.
The Psychic is the second book in the Starlight Cafe Series. The first book is The Barista. If you haven’t read it yet you should.
The series focuses on the lives of people who frequent The Starlight Cafe, a fictional little coffee shop in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. Each book is a complete story so you can read them in any order. All of the books contain a paranormal element and a love story. The Barista’s paranormal element was very slight. I think that’s probably why I went to town with the paranormal element in The Psychic. It is called The Psychic after all.
This book has lots of ghosts in it because I love writing about ghosts. It’s about a woman named Cheryl who works as a tarot card reader. One day a man asks for her help getting rid of the ghosts who have been haunting him for a year. She reluctantly agrees to help him even though hauntings are not her specialty. That’s all I’ll tell you about the plot for now.
There are themes in all of my novels about hope, change, and self-acceptance. This book has those messages too. Cheryl learns to trust herself and Adam, the client she is helping. She’s had a difficult past and helping the other people in the story, both living and dead, helps her heal and learn to trust her own talents and abilities.
Now that I’ve finished the first draft I have to read through it for inconsistencies and get it as clean as possible before sending to it beta readers.
Writing a novel involves a lot of steps, but it feels so good once it’s done.
