Cheryl removed the cards from their velvet satchel and handed them to Adam. "Shuffle the deck."
He took them reluctantly. The cards slapped against each other as he shuffled.
"You thought about the question you wanted to ask the cards, right?"
He nodded and handed her the deck.
She closed her eyes and took a few slow, deep breaths, focusing on Adam and the apartment. Dark energy swirled around them. She started laying out the cards in a Celtic cross spread, the one she always used, but after she laid out the first two cards, tension gripped her chest. She swallowed hard and stopped.
"Is something wrong?" Adam asked.
She tried to inhale and couldn't, her lungs contracting when they should have been expanding. She closed her eyes and attempted to push away the panic.
"Cheryl?"
Her eyelids fluttered open. A man and a woman stood in front of the table. They wore party clothes. A beaded gown was draped over the woman's narrow frame. The man was dressed in a tuxedo. It was as if they were there, but not there, all at once. Cheryl took hold of Adam's arm, her fingertips digging into his flesh. "Can you see that?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"What?" Adam swiveled, looking around the room.
"There!" Cheryl pointed at the couple standing directly in front of the table. "They're right there!" Her heart pounded in her chest. "Can't you see them?" The chill in the air wrapped around her. She picked up the tarot cards she'd placed on the table and added them back to the deck. Her heart was a wild animal, clawing at her rib cage. She stood and left the kitchen swiftly. Stumbling on a pile of clothes, her knee hit the ground hard. She ignored the pain and sprang to her feet. Collecting her purse from the couch, she started toward the door.
"Wait!" Adam called after her. "You saw it? You saw my ghost! There's more than one?"
Cheryl wasn't listening. She was walking to the door. She needed to get out of there, now.
"You can't just leave!" Adam called after her. "You're supposed to be helping me. You said you would try to get rid of them."
She opened the door. When she turned around to speak to him, she saw them again. Two of them hovered just inches from the floor in the kitchen doorway. They were ghosts, actual ghosts. "I can't do this. I thought I could help you, but I can't. You have to find someone else."

About the Stories
I love ghost stories, and even when I'm trying not to write something paranormal, small supernatural elements find their way into the stories. When I wrote the first book in Suncoast Paranormal, I wasn't planning on making it a series, but once I finished the book I knew the characters had more stories to tell.
The books follow a couple who have started a paranormal investigation business together. The first book, The Psychic, is an origin story. You find out how they met. The following books are different cases they investigate interwoven with their relationship story.
The books are reminiscent of shows I loved, like Ghost Whisperer and Medium. They also have elements of the Conjuring. The stories are a little scary, kind of quirky, and a whole lot of fun.:)
